Get started in three steps
-
1
Download the AI models once
About 900 MB on Wi-Fi. After that, everything works offline and nothing you do leaves this device.
-
2
Plan a walk
Choose your time and place. You get a short list of things to look for, then the screen goes quiet.
-
3
Identify what you find
Take one photo, get a name and two things to check in person, and save it to your journal.
New here? The full guide explains everything in five minutes.
Go outside
Plan a short walk with things to look for
Pick how long you have and where you'll be. Gemma writes a few things to find, then the screen gets out of your way.
Things to look for
When you start, the screen switches to a timer and checklist. Tick things off as you find them, and tap I found something to identify it.
Plan
A list made for your time, place and season.
Walk
A quiet screen with a timer. Pocket the phone.
Spot
One photo, one name, two things to check.
Identify
What did you find?
Add a photo of a plant, bird, bug, mushroom or leaf. It's identified on this device and never uploaded.
Tips for a good identification
- Fill the frame with one subject. One flower, one leaf or one bird, not the whole garden.
- Get the key parts in view: the face and breast of a bird, the cap and gills of a mushroom, a whole leaf.
- Avoid heavy zoom and backlight. Step closer and keep the sun behind you.
- Not sure? Check the other options. The right answer is often second. Tap it to switch.

Not it? Pick another option:
Field note written on this device
Check it lists things to confirm with your own eyes. Look nearby gives you something to find next. How notes work
Journal
Your finds
No finds yet
Your journal fills up when you go outside, not when you scroll.
Setup
Download once, use offline
Both models run inside your browser. Download them once on Wi-Fi and the app keeps working on a trail with no signal. Nothing you photograph or write is sent anywhere.
Google's open image model, about 100 MB. Matches your photo against a built-in field guide of about 150 species.
Google's open-weight model. Writes the field notes and walk ideas.
Auto uses your GPU when the browser supports WebGPU and falls back to the CPU if it fails. The CPU always uses the 270M model (~590 MB).

Why it runs on your device
- No signal needed. Trails, parks and riverbanks often have no coverage. A cloud API would stop working exactly where you need it.
- Your locations stay private. A journal of where you walk is sensitive. Here it only exists in this browser.
- Free to run. No API key and no per-photo cost.
- You can extend it. The species list is a plain file. Add the birds in your area and the model knows them right away. How
